turtle

This turtle was just waiting to be mushed by the next vehicle on the boat ramp to the Kentucky River at Fort Boonesborough. I moved it to the edge into the grasses, but took photos before that. What kind of turtle is this? It's shell looked as though it had some strange growths on it and it's right hind leg wasn't retracting all the way anymore. Mostly, it just looked bewildered.

My guess is the strange growths is its shell flaking. Every few months turtles shed there shell much like our skin. Just a fine layer off the top flakes off all around, including the underside.

As for what type it is, It resembles a red eared slider. How big was it? Chances are it was someone's pet and it was either released or escaped. They are sweet turtles. I use to have 4 in an outdoor pond but all of them "ran away". I think they are down living in the creek near the house.

Thanks for saving the little guy from the boat ramp!
